Increase Social Traffic Through a Loyalty and Rewards Program

Sticky Post By Hangry On July 12, 2017

Rewarding students for using your mobile app is a method we discuss quite often in this corner of the Internet. Setting up a Loyalty and Rewards program is the ideal way to keep students using your app while driving behavior. A good mobile app is one that catches a potential user’s attention, but a great mobile app is one that will keep user around and at top of mind through the use of a Loyalty and Rewards program.

So the question of the day becomes, can we do better? How can you make a Loyalty and Rewards program THAT much more effective, and drive behavior even further?

The answer is simple. Use what matters most to your audience. If your audience is students, like Hangry’s, then your answer is Social Media. Allow your Loyalty Program to drive social media traffic, and allow your social channels to enhance your Loyalty Program — A hybrid mobile app tool with features that can stand alone, but only improve when the other is added. Ying and Yang.

The best feature of a Loyalty and Rewards program? Outcomes are up to you, the app owner. By placing rewards on certain actions, purchases, dropped locations etc. you can drive behavior. This is where social media comes into play. Take Hangry’s platform for example; through our campus dining and auxiliary services app, we send push notifications to our students encouraging them to share photos of their meals or dining experiences on social media. Once they’ve posted, we can reward them by giving them points to redeem in the rewards store. By giving students an incentive to post, you instantly increase relevant social media traffic.

The whole point of social media is to be seen, or to have your content shared. So, if your platform includes social channels, you can share the content posted by your users to also increase their social presence. This can be done by ‘Weekly Post Favourites’ on your Instagram story, or ‘Fan photos of the Day’. If you’re signing on with the Hangry Campus Branded App, we have Success Coaches who can provide endless ideas for Social Media Campaigns.

How It’s Worked for Us (Exponential Follower Increase)

This past year, Hangry created multiple Social Campaigns that provided points for our students towards the rewards store. The process was very simple:

  • Introduce the Social Campaign (ex. #NotSoNewYearsResolutions)
  • Provide promotional codes via social media accounts every day
  • Student enters promotional code at end of Hangry order to earn points towards rewards store
  • Repeat process the next day

This social media campaign provides many benefits to both the user and the app owner. By providing promotional codes through social media only, Hangry was able to build a targeted group of followers who we know are using our product. From there, these codes could then be redeemed for points towards our rewards store. In addition, the promotional codes could only be applied after a student had placed an order with Hangry. Therefore, by the end of this Social Campaign we accomplished the following:

  • A 90% follower increase on social
  • A 80% increase in social traffic (i.e. likes, comments)
  • A 31% increase in total sales

In addition, students received points daily towards prizes in our rewards store, we stayed top-of-mind with our follower base, and we were able to drive traffic to Hangry locations on campus. This multi-faceted system is just another reason why a Loyalty and Rewards system is necessary for the success of a consumer-based mobile app.
